One year after the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel, the war in Gaza grinds on as it expands into a regional war.
Yes, Hamas did awful things and committed war crimes on that terrible day . . .
. . . but that can’t be an excuse to do anything at all in response, no matter how brutal or horrific.
All along — from the very beginning of the war — President Joe Biden has called for Israel to temper its response to the Oct. 7 attack.
Biden called out Netanyahu’s “over the top” reaction and has repeatedly pushed for peace, all the while continuing to arm Israel to the teeth. (With one tiny window when the U.S. temporarily withheld 2000-pound bombs.)
As I’ve said from the beginning: It is possible to condemn the Hamas violence that kicked off this war AND condemn Netanyahu’s extreme overreaction and ongoing war crimes.
Yes, we can show support for the victims in Israel . . . but do we have to keep supplying the weapons that have killed over 40,000 Palestinians and left thousands of children missing limbs?
Joe Biden has tied himself in knots trying to remain a stalwart ally of Israel and be tough on Hamas while pushing for civilian protection at the same time.
It’s mighty hard to square that circle when your ally has bombed schools, hospitals and civilians and turned Gaza to rubble.
But, hey! We tried the floating pier, right?
I know we’ve got to stay focused and beat Donald Trump in November — who would be even worse when it comes to the Middle East — but we just can’t ignore what is going on in Gaza and now Lebanon.
Unfortunately, this won’t make it any easier to beat Trump.
Stay tuned for some campaign cartoons coming soon.
Thank you so much for following (and supporting!) my work, I’ll see you back here shortly . . .

Amongst the many Ironies of this are those Americans who will vote for Trump under the illusion that he'll miraculously stop Russia's invasion of Ukraine and also bring peace to the Middle East. Neither of which will happen. If anything A Trump administration would escalate this war by attacking Iran even further, thereby provoking WW3. The Death-cult Evangelical loonies behind Trump see what's going on in Israel as their opportunity to help bring Jeebus back from his magical sky kingdom while blowing the rest of us all up.
The only solution to this intractable problem is for the US to apply pressure to All the parties involved in this to cease fire. But unfortunately, Russia and other outside players will work against that goal. With any luck Israeli citizens themselves will wake up and work to rid themselves of the idiots running their country.
If Israel is such a great, powerful country why don't they use their own money and build their own war machines? They've had a few thousand years to get there. Do we over-pet Israel just because?
